The iPhone 5S is starting a slow motion commotion, with rumours of a slow-mo mode — just like the Samsung Galaxy S4.
The slo-mo clues, spotted by 9to5Mac, come from code hidden in iOS 7, the next generation of Apple software for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Codenamed Mogul, the slow-motion feature would allow for video recorded at 120 frames per second, allowing you to play back the results at standard speeds and create a ssssllloooowwwed-doooowwwwnnn effect that would make John Woo proud.
Although you can get a beta version of iOS 7 on the iPhone 5 and other present models, the current camera lacks the required hardware to film in slo-mo. So we’ll have to wait at least until the next iPhone turns up with iOS 7 later in the year to try slow-motion video — and even then there’s no guarantee the feature will actually be turned on.
Apple is expected to announce not one but two iPhones this time around: the usual iPhone update, set to be called the iPhone 5S, and a cheaper plastic iPhone rumoured to be called the iPhone Light.
The camera is a real area of focus — focus, geddit? — for smart-phone manufacturers. Samsung just released the Galaxy S4 Zoom, and Nokia is set to unveil the 41-megapixel Lumia 1020 this week.
