It’s looking like it may not be an iPhone summer after all. Apple’s announcement that iOS and Mac OS will be the focus at its WWDC show in June has sparked speculation that it will be a software-only affair, while new reports in Japan claim the iPhone 5 won’t contribute to Apple’s 2011 financial year, which ends on 24 September.
Macotakara is the blog with the latter information, citing the “sources in the China supply chain” that are customary for this kind of story. It also suggests Apple hasn’t started ordering components for its fifth-generation iPhone yet, which is another hint at a later release than usual for the device.
The story suggests the iPhone 5 could launch at any time in the first half of Apple’s 2012 fiscal year, which could see it slip into the calendar year 2012. Our money is still on an October debut for the device, however, perhaps alongside a new iPod touch with similar specs at Apple’s traditional autumn music event.
That might also tie in with the rumours earlier this week about the iOS 5 software launching this autumn too, even if it gets previewed at WWDC. Apple traditionally launches each major update to its iOS software alongside a new iPhone.
New iPhone, new iPod touch, new iOS all together in autumn, six months after the launch of the iPad 2 to ensure the Apple hardcore have had time to recharge their wallets? It sounds like a sensible strategy to us. Although remember those rumours about an iPad 3 making its debut in autumn too…
