iPhone 5 casing snaps tip striped back, taller device

Leaked snaps purporting to show the rump of the next iPhone have cropped up online, hinting Apple’s new blower will have a taller frame and a bigger screen.

9to5Mac was sent an image reckoned to show the iPhone 5’s back plating by gadget repair site iFixyouri, which the phone-fixing site claims is a new part in its catalogue. Later 9to5Mac acquired more images that would seem to corroborate the design, which has a peculiar Pepé Le Pew-style stripe down the back. Engadget, meanwhile, acquired yet more similar snaps.

A smaller connector port is present at the bottom of the mysterious frame, along with a newly placed headphone port. The speaker grille has a new look as well, while there’s a tiny gap between the camera and flash, which could be a repositioned microphone.

The frame looks a bit taller than the existing iPhone 4S — a quirk that chimes with recent reports that Apple’s next toy will be the same width but will have a taller 4-inch display, so that when you spin it on its side you get a widescreen view.

Absolutely nothing about the next iPhone has been confirmed by Apple itself, so take everything you hear for now with a pinch of salt, as these images could be clever fakes or prototype designs that will never make it onto shop shelves. I’ll let you know as soon as we hear more on this much-anticipated gadget.

We’ll likely get our first official taste of what to expect on the iPhone 5 on 11 June at WWDC, when Apple’s expected to talk about a new version of iOS, the next version of its mobile operating system that will surely be lurking on any new devices.

What do you think of these snaps? Could they be genuine, and if so, will the new look be enough to keep the Samsung Galaxy S3 at bay? Let me know, and enjoy the iPhone 5 rumour round-up video embedded below.
