If you have a head for numbers, the following is a curious brain boggler.
A blog called TenFingerCrunch has collected data from IDC and NetMarketShare that suggests that iOS users access the web on their devices vastly more than Android device owners — despite the fact that the lion’s share of devices are sold on Google’s platform.
Android currently represents 75 per cent of global smartphone and tablet sales, but accounts for only 21 per cent of web traffic from mobile devices. iOS dominates this statistic, with 65 per cent.
This does make a strong case for business owners who are considering what platforms to target for mobile site development and apps, but it also poses interesting questions about the demographics of Android sales. The obvious difference between iOS and Android is pricing, and the large divide in usage suggests that many people who own Android devices don’t also pay for mobile data, or don’t know how to use it.
Perhaps this Christmas, we might consider holding a smartphone how-to session for mum and dad.
