iOS 4.2 update imminent, might actually make iPhone 3G work properly

The release of iOS 4.2 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is imminent, and it looks like it could be smashing news for iPhone 3G owners angry that the fourth version of Apple’s OS had turned their devices into iBricks.

Apple has sent an email to developers telling them to have their apps ready, Pocket-lint reports, as “iOS 4.2 will soon be in the hands of millions of customers around the world.”

It could be a great step forward for people still using the older iPhone 3G and 3GS. A lawsuit was filed against Apple over the iOS 4 update, accusing it of trying to force people to upgrade by slyly hamstringing older iPhones. The iOS 4.1 update was supposed to have fixed the problems, but the complaints kept coming.

iOS 4.2 might be able to solve the issues. The gold master version iOS 4.2, normally only released to developers, was tested on the iPhone 3G by Apple website TiPb, with positive results. It was said to work much better than iOS 4 did, doing a decent job of typing, scrolling, pinching and zooming. Check out the video below.

The iOS 4.2 update will also fix an alarm bug which caused iPhone owners running iOS 4 to wake up late when the clocks went back, as their alarms weren’t properly reset.

Those of you who own an iPad will find the update most valuable, as it’ll provide several features only available on the smaller devices, such as multi-tasking, folders and Game Centre. It will also provide iOS devices with wireless printing capability, and Airplay, allowing you to stream videos, music and photos to the new Apple TV.
