Android Police reports that the over-the-air update has been shipped out to people who work at Google so it can be tested before being released to Nexus S owners in the wider world.
A Google engineer called Adel Saoud wrote on Google+, “Just got Ice Cream Sandwich update on my Nexus S & it’s looking great :)”.
Below in the same thread, self-described independent software developer Adnan Hodzic writes that Ice Cream Sandwich on the Nexus S delivers “huge performance differences”, which is a welcome omen for Nexus S owners wondering how their mobiles will cope with the latest version of Android.
We’re hoping that the update arrives soon — one of the major reasons for buying the Nexus S is that, because it’s running an unmodified version of Android, it should receive new versions of Android much faster than other phones that use altered versions of Google’s mobile OS.
If Nexus S owners have to wait just as long as people who use other Android phones, they may start to wonder what the point was in opting for the Nexus S in the first place. CNET reckons that testing of Ice Cream Sandwich on the Nexus S is expected to take another few weeks.
