Hudl half

This week has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous — from the sublimely high-end new iPad Air, Nokia Lumia 2520 and Microsoft Surface 2, to the ridiculously cheap Carphone Warehouse Avoca 7, costing just £50.

You read that right: a 7-inch Android tablet for £50. Carphone Warehouse has slashed the price of the Avoca 7, usually £100, to fire back at the raft of rival cheap tablets announced over the past few weeks.

As johnny-come-lately retailers Tesco and Argos launch their hundred pound-or-so slates the Tesco Hudl and Argos MyTablet, the folks at Carphone Warehouse want to remind everyone they do this stuff for a living.

The Avoca 7 runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It has a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage. A video calling camera is built into the front, and the tablet promises up to 8 hours of battery life.

The 7-inch screen’s resolution is 800×480, so it’s not exactly a movie machine, but the kids won’t mind. And if they have any smart remarks about the Nexus 7 being a far superior tablet for a low price then they’re asking for a clip round the ear’ole.

Is the Carphone Warehouse tablet a solid bargain or false economy? What’s the minimum you should spend on a tablet to get a decent device? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.
