Huawei Ascend Y201 mega

Huawei has form when it comes to cobbling together ultra-cheap Android mobiles, and now the author of the budget-buoying Ascend G300 is making another wallet-friendly blower.

Enter the Ascend Y201, strutting into the spotlight from stage right. This affordable gadget has a 3.5-inch display, a 3.2-megapixel camera and is powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread. In other words, it has everything you need to get smart phone kicks on the cheap.

It’s powered by an 800MHz processor, which is a far cry from the quad-core chips humming under the hoods of the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the HTC One X, but hey, did we mention it’s cheap?

How cheap exactly? The Y201 is available for a mere £70 on pay as you go or £10 on contract from Tesco Mobile, where you can nab the Y201 exclusively in white.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread is a fine operating system, but it’s now two versions behind the times. It’s unfortunate that this wee mobile isn’t powered by more recent software, as we had previously heard that the Y201 pro would be getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The biggest drawback you’ll experience with this cost-cutting smart phone is a lowly 320×480-pixel screen resolution, which will make browsing the web feel more cramped than Chewbacca in a Mini.

The Y201 has plenty of competition, thanks to cheap Android phones getting better and more numerous. If your budget’s under £100, also investigate the Ascend G300 mentioned above, the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 and maybe the HTC Explorer too.

How much did your phone set you back? Would you invest in the Y201 as your main mobile, or would it make an excellent back-up device? Tell me in the comments or on our Facebook wall.
