HTC planning first wearable device with HTC One sequel

HTC is hoping a smart watch will erase memories of the HTC One‘s disappointing performance. The company is planning its first wearable device to take on the Samsung Galaxy Gear watch, arriving this year alongside the HTC One’s smart phone sequel.

“We feel positive and optimistic about 2014 when compared to 2013,” Chang Chialin, chief financial officer and head of global sales told Bloomberg.

2013 certainly wasn’t a banner year for HTC. Despite the quality of the excellent HTC One, the Taiwanese company has struggled in comparison to Apple and Samsung, making a loss for the first time ever. And that’s despite recruiting Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr to front the company’s ads.

But rumours have abounded of a follow-up to the HTC One, codenamed the M8 and currently tipped to show up in March, possibly packing a 5-inch, 1080p screen.

HTC chairman Cher Wang also revealed that HTC had been looking at smart watches and wearable devices for “many years” but had to solve problems with the battery and LCD light screen.

Is a smart watch just the thing to turn round HTC’s fortunes? Tell me your thoughts in the comments.
