HTC has confirmed the Android Jelly Bean update process for the HTC One X and One S will begin this month. The smart phone pair could receive the latest version of Android and HTC’s Sense user interface before October is out, all being well.
Jelly Bean is the latest version of Google’s software for mobile phones and tablets, and HTC’s Sense interface adds extra features. HTC told CNET that the One X and S would get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and HTC Sense 4+ sometime between now and Christmas, so it’s good to see the schedule taking shape.
Before you get too excited though, bear in mind that an update starts by being sent out to phone networks. They then have to work out whether the update breaks any of the annoying apps they insist on stuffing into your phone, which can delay its arrival on your handset.
In theory, unlocked phones shouldn’t have that problem, but the Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich update revealed that in some cases the networks have to complete their updates before unlocked phones get a look in. Fingers crossed that’s not the case here.
Jelly Bean adds clever features such as Google Now, which gives you information before you even know you need it, as well as a bunch of other features I can’t remember that you’ll never use anyway. Click here for our guide to every version of Android.
This could be a timely update for anyone considering trying 4G. Rival 4G phone the Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE — a 4G version of the S3 — has Jelly Bean from day one. As the first 4G phones are on sale now, the 4G version of the One X, the One XL, needs to update if it’s to stay in the running with the S3 LTE.
