In a statement, HTC priced the new Android-powered smartphone at AU$0 upfront on a AU$50 Optus plan and AU$39 a month on the telco’s mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) subsidiary, Virgin Mobile. No Telstra pricing was available at the time of writing.

The HTC One S is one of three new smartphones from the Taiwanese manufacturer that was announced this year at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The S takes the middle position in the trio of phones, between the flagship One X and the lower-spec One V.

This model sports a 4.3-inch qHD resolution LCD screen, and is powered by a dual-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm processor. HTC unifies its range with the Sense UI, a interface layer on top of Android, featuring attractively design widgets and customised core applications, like the web browser and address book. HTC also includes unique applications, like its Watch video rental service.

The One X launched earlier in the year on the Optus and Vodafone networks, plus a number of MVNO services like Crazy John’s, Telechoice and Virgin. Shortly after, Telstra introduced the One XL, a 4G version of the original model.
