O2 has restarted the process of sending out Android 2.2 Froyo to the HTC Desire, more than three weeks after its first attempt turned into a big, fat fail.
O2 has confirmed the second roll-out, with Desire owners on the network already receiving Froyo. The first attempt to roll out Android 2.2 turned into a farce, with owners reporting problems after downloading it. Some said the Desire had been ‘bricked’, freezing at the start-up screen. For some people, the update did work, but O2 decided to put the update on hold to iron out problems.
The issues look like they’ve been resolved, but we would still recommend you back up all your important data before putting the over the air update on your phone.
Android 2.2 on the HTC Desire will be a significant upgrade, bringing the ability to run Flash Player 10.1, speed and performance improvements, hi-def video recording, and other assorted benefits. With the HTC Desire HD and Desire Z coming out very soon, the performance upgrade should mean owners of old Desire handsets won’t be seething with envy.
The Android 2.2 update was first released by HTC at the beginning of August, but, at that time, it was only available to SIM-free, unlocked handsets. Owners on networks have had to wait some time for the upgrade, as it needs testing by operators before being sent out.
If you’re a Desire owner on O2, let us know in the comments section below how the update is going for you.
