The HTC Desire HD has been launched, the eagerly awaited update to the original Desire, just as we predicted last month.
It turns out the leak of the HTC Desire HD and Qwerty keyboard-toting HTC Desire Z in August was bang on, with the devices announced in London along with an update of HTC Sense.
The HTC Desire HD has a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, Dolby Mobile and SRS virtual sound, and is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm 8255 Snapdragon processor, which has dramatically cut the power-up sequence, HTC promises. The camera packs 8 megapixels (as opposed to the 5 megapixels of the original), and can record 720p HD video.
It will also come with Android 2.2 straight out of the box, and carry the usual connectivity we expect, such as 3G, HSPDA, Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth.
The Desire HD has much to live up to. We gave the original HTC Desire a five-star rating, and you loved it too, also giving it five stars. We should be getting the device here in October, on contracts for around £35 a month.
Nokia, which also launched some good-looking new phones yesterday, was not particularly happy with HTC stealing its thunder. In a tweet, Nokia said it wasn’t impressed with HTC sending buses straight to the front door of Nokia World to take journos to its own press event.
By way of reaction, we saw people holding giant red balloons reading “I know where I’m going with Nokia’s Ovi Maps” directly outside the entrance of the HTC event.
But that wasn’t all. Nokia handed out lunches to those going to the HTC event, including former CNETer Andy Lim, with a note offering a sandwich called the HTC — ham, tomato and cheese — which was “not the most exciting”. It also offered an energy bar in case you needed a boost, a giant foam finger for the Q&A, a pen and pad for doodling, and ear plugs and eye-mask “in case they got snoozy”.
