HTC announces One SC smartphone with funky backside

HTC has announced a new smartphone for China that comes with a really interesting backside.

Dubbed the One SC, the device comes with a 4.3-inch WVGA HD display and support for both CDMA and GSM networks. The handset is running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and comes with 4GB of onboard storage that’s expandable to 32GB with a microSD card.

The One SC’s most interesting feature, however, might just be its design. On the front, the device looks like any other, offering a prominent screen with a few buttons to boot. However, on the back, the handset looks like several parts were tossed together in an asymmetrical design. The HTC logo sits to the right in a ridged plastic area, while the Beats Audio logo sits to its left in a smooth portion of the backside. Up top, a darker gray surrounds the device’s rear camera and flash.

It has been a busy week for smartphone announcements. Earlier this week, Nokia unveiled both the Lumia 820 and 920 Windows Phone 8-based handsets. Although Nokia hasn’t said when those devices might launch, a report cropped up today, suggesting the Lumia 920 will hit store shelves on November 2. And Motorola announced three new Droid Razr Android phones, two with even better battery life than before.

Also this week, Apple announced that it’ll be holding a special press event on September 12. The company is expected to unveil a new iPhone at that event.

Unlike all of those devices, however, the One SC is at least for now not slated for release outside of China.
