HTC announced today the imminent release of the Titan 4G, the company’s first Windows Phone handset in over 12 months and Australia’s first 4G phone that will be running on Microsoft’s mobile OS.
Telstra will range the Titan 4G from $0 upfront on an AU$79 Freedom Connect plan, starting from Tuesday 29 May. This plan will include 2GB of data and AU$800 worth of calling and messaging. When used in Telstra’s 4G coverage zones, the Titan is capable of achieving data speeds between 2Mbps to 40Mbps. Outside of these zones, the handset will fall back on dual-channel HSPA speeds.
The Titan was first unveiled by HTC in February, at the annual Mobile World Congress expo in Barcelona. Besides its fast network speeds, the Titan also garnered attention for having the ability to take 16-megapixel photos — a first for smartphones. It also sports a large 4.7-inch LCD display and a 1.5GHz processor.
The announcement of Titan’s release follows the launch of the Optus-bound Nokia Lumia 900 last week. Nokia has been the only phone manufacturer releasing Windows Phone handsets in Australia lately and will have four models in the market, shortly. Optus will sell the Lumia 900 for AU$0 upfront on AU$60 plans, and electronics retailers will stock the phone for AU$699 RRP.
