Two Fitbit Flex settings you’ll want to change

Wearing an activity tracker such as the Fitbit Flex is an efficient way to increase your activity. Counting steps motivates some users, while the number of calories burned or total distance traveled may be bigger motivation for others. The Fitbit Flex tracks all of these categories, but the indicator lights when you double-tap the tracker only indicate progress towards your daily steps goal. And without a small screen (like the Fitbit One is equipped with) you can’t quickly scroll through your progress for your other goals. Sure, you can just launch the app on your phone, but being able to view your progress just by glancing down is convenient.

Progress you care about There is a way, however, to change what the status indicators represent. You’ll need to log into your Fitbit account on the Web site, and then click on the Settings or “gear” icon in the top-right corner and select the Flex from your connected devices.

Then click on the Device Settings option on the left and change the Daily Goal Progress to reflect the stat that means the most to you. Your choices are:

  • Steps
  • Distance
  • Calories
  • Very active minutes

After selecting your category, sync your Fitbit either using the mobile app or via your computer to save the changes to your Flex.

Dominant hand Another setting you’ll want to adjust while you’re on the site is the Dominant Hand setting. Letting Fitbit know which arm you’re wearing the Flex on will result in more accurate tracking of your steps and activity.

You can change this setting just below the Daily Goal Progress section. Again, if you make changes to the dominant hand you’ll need to sync your Flex in order for the changes to be saved to the device.

Just getting started with the Flex? Make sure to follow our guide to setting it up.
