How to watch Super Bowl 50 in Australia

If you’re reading this we can probably assume you didn’t manage to score those first class flights to San Francisco and box seats in Levi’s Stadium for Super Bowl 50. Our condolences.

But if you’re keen to watch the big game, your options are no longer limited to chucking a sickie, heading down to your local pub and queuing for over-priced sliders and mid-range American beers.

The Super Bowl will be airing from 10:30 a.m. AEDT (9:30 a.m. AEST in Queensland, 10 a.m. ACDT in South Australia, 9 a.m. ACST in the NT and 8:30 a.m. AWST in WA), but coverage begins half an hour before on 7Mate (Digital Channel 73).

If you can’t get to a TV, you’re still in luck. Since Channel 7 started streaming their digital channels to mobile devices as well as desktop last year, you can watch the game on your mobile or tablet, as well as that sneaky second window you’ve minimised on your work computer.

Head to the 7Live website and click on the 7Mate tab to watch the game on desktop. If you’re on mobile or tablet, you’ll need to download the Plus7 app (available on both iOS and Android) to get the live stream, or you can go to 7Live URL in your mobile browser.

Be warned — we were hit with a bit of a delay on the live stream (about a minute and a half) so you might want to stay off Twitter if you’re desperate to avoid spoilers.

The game is also airing on ESPN on Foxtel, and Foxtel subscribers can watch it on mobile devices using Foxtel Go. If today feels like a good day to sign up for Foxtel over IPTV, you can get ESPN on Foxtel Play.

Unfortunately, the local free-to-air stream won’t give you the US commercials (if you’re into that kind of thing — although any kind of ads would be better than watching “My Kitchen Rules” highlights between plays in my books).

If you want to see a cryptic, time-travelling Liam Neeson force his son through a nightmarish Tron-scape for LG, or Alec Baldwin teach Missy Elliot about the wonders of the Amazon Echo, all the Super Bowl 50 commercials can be viewed here.

Our pick for the big game? While we’d love to send Peyton Manning out on a win, Panthers get our Lock of the Week.

Update, 3:05 p.m. AEDT: Well whaddya know! The Denver Broncos took the Vince Lombardi Trophy. I guess you can’t be right all the time.
