Google puts the kibosh on the Nexus 6

Looking for a Nexus 6 smartphone? You won’t find one through Google anymore.

The Nexus 6 page on the Google Store says the phone is no longer available for purchase. Google apparently sent the device to the great beyond Tuesday, according to blog site DroidLife, which discovered that the phone was no longer up for grabs.

The decommissioning of the Nexus 6 shouldn’t come as a huge surprise after Google released its successor, the Nexus 6P, in November. The Nexus 6 was saddled with a huge 6-inch screen and a hefty price tag, a break from past Nexus phones and a possible contributor to its cool reception.

Though big-screened smartphones have found a niche among consumers, there’s a point at which a phone may just be too large to be used and held comfortably, especially by people with smaller hands. With the Nexus 6, Google may have found that point.

The Nexus 6 did come with some beefy specs, including a quad-core Snapdragon processor, 3GB of RAM, an option for 32 or 64 gigabytes of internal storage and a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera. The phone also packed a high starting price of $649 unlocked, though the cost came down over time.

To try to appeal to a greater range of buyers, Google released two model phones this year: the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X, both of which come with smaller screens and lower price tags. Sporting a 5.7-inch display, the 6P starts at $499, while the 5X offers a 5.2-inch screen and is currently selling for $329.

Those of you still hankering for a Nexus 6 aren’t totally out of luck. You can still find the phone at sites like Amazon and eBay.
