Google Glass wearers will no longer have to reach for their phones to check out new notifications.
On Tuesday, Google revealed that Google Glass will receive a new update that carries with it a feature called Notification Sync. Through this feature, you’ll be able to view notifications of new text messages, reminders, and other up-to-the-minute pieces of information within Google Glass. Just like on your phone, you can choose which apps send you notifications via Glass.
The feature is similar to notifications that you would receive on a smartwatch running Google’s Android Wear OS. In that case, you would enable notifications that normally appear only on your phone to pop up on your watch. With this feature, Google is trying to minimize the number of times that smartwatch and Google Glass users have to actually pull out their phones.
“Max sent you a WhatsApp message, marycam81 tagged you in a photo, your Lyft has arrived… these are just some of the reasons for pulling out your phone,” Google said in a Google+ post. “You want to know about the things that matter to you, but you don’t want to be distracted by your phone when you could be enjoying the moment. Today we’re launching Notification Sync on Glass, which means you can see your Android phone app notifications at a glance. You may have already seen this with Android Wear, but now when you put Glass on, you can get the information you need when you need it — all without taking your phone out of your pocket.”
To set up the notifications, you open the MyGlass app on your phone and simply enable them. A few more steps, and eventually a status message on your phone will pop up to show you the updates connected to Glass. To use the feature, you’ll need to make sure you’re running the latest v3.3.0 version of MyGlass. You’ll also need a new Glass update, which Google promises will be out and about this week.
