Google on Thursday announced an update to its Fit app on Android. The health-tracking software will now provide real-time information on your walks, runs and bike rides. The Google Fit app will record your speed, pace, route, elevation and more using only your smartphone. This on top of its ability to already track steps, distance, active minutes, and calories burned throughout the day.
You will also be able to use Google Fit with your Android Wear smartwatch to track strength training. The software will able to detect activities like sit-ups, push-ups, and squats and then automatically add them to your daily workout stats. This is similar to functionality we have seen from third-party apps, such as Wear Fitness Personal Trainer.
In addition, the app will now pair with a variety of nutrition and weight loss apps, such as MyFitnessPal, Fatsecret, Lifesum, or LoseIt. Google has also added sleep tracking support for use with the Sleep as Android app and activity trackers such as Xiaomi Mi Band, Sony Smartband 2 and Basis Peak. While these recent changes will surely help the platform, it still doesn’t include support for more mainstream devices, such as those from Fitbit, Jawbone or Garmin.
Google is promising the updated app will provide even better insights into your health and fitness. Android users will see the updated Google Fit app rolling out in the coming days.
