The patent portfolio of defunct Israeli phone manufacturer Modu has been bought by Google for around £3m.
Modu manufactured tiny phones that could be slid into a range of different jackets, with various designs and functions. For example, the Modu 1 could be inserted into a dock that turned it into a digital picture frame, or a jacket that added a 3-megapixel camera.
The company was also working on the Modu T, a second-generation touchscreen modular device that could potentially have run Android. Sadly, that phone never made it to market because of the company’s financial problems.
Now that Google’s bought Modu’s patent portfolio, we could yet see a modular Android handset. Would you want such a device? Let us know in the comments section below or on our Facebook wall.
