Giffgaff and Tesco Mobile also getting 4G, O2 confirms

Giffgaff and Tesco Mobile are poised to go 4G, O2 has confirmed.

The oxygenated operator told us that it would be making 4G available to both Giffgaff and Tesco Mobile — which already use O2’s network — though wasn’t able to offer any specific details on 4G launch plans for either company.

That’s potentially great news for anyone who subscribes to either of the two operators, which generally offer cheaper tariffs than O2, Vodafone and EE. Nothing is certain yet in terms of what will be offered though, as Giffgaff and Tesco Mobile could decide not to offer 4G, if it’s going to be too expensive for them to bother with. All we know for now is that the two networks will have the option to go 4G, and the ball is now in their court.

In recent hours O2 has confirmed that its own 4G network will be making its grand debut on 29 August, with tariff prices starting from £26.

It’s not clear yet what that £26 will get you, but hopefully it’ll offer more data than EE’s rather stingey allowances. Not much of the country will be covered at launch, with O2 saying only London, Leeds and Bradford will have 4G at first.

Shoppers looking for speedy data on the cheap will be hoping that the introduction of Vodafone and Three’s 4G services will trigger a price war among operators, making the high-speed technology available to phone fans buying on a budget.
