Start stretching out those palms, people — fresh rumours suggest Samsung is cooking up its biggest smart phone yet, to debut in the second half of 2013.
The mobile, which if real would surely be the third Galaxy Note smart phone, is reckoned to sport a 5.9-inch OLED display, the Korea Times reports, citing a company official speaking “on condition of anonymity”.
As per usual with unconfirmed rumours, it’s wise to swallow this data with a snifter of salt. The same publication earlier pegged the Note 3 to have a 6.3-inch screen and an 8-core processor, which could mean a separate, non-Note 5.9-inch phone is in the works, or could mean that one or both rumours are mere speculation.
Whatever the case, Samsung is becoming famously fond of monumental mobiles — having found surprising success with the 5.3-inch Galaxy Note and 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2 — so I’ve no doubt we’ll see new Note devices and more massive displays in 2013.
Samsung isn’t the only manufacturer that wants to rupture your hand with a sense-defying screen. Huawei recently lifted the lid on the 6.1-inch Ascend Mate, while Sony’s new flagship is the (slightly more reasonable) 5-inch Xperia Z.
There are signs that smart phones and tablets will soon merge. As well as phones getting bigger, I recently got my mitts on the Asus FonePad, a cheap 7-inch tablet with all the necessary tech to make phone calls.
