EE is doubling 4G speeds this week as it unveils more new deals. Oh, and EE is going to buy you lunch with its new NFC contactless payment thingy called Cash on Tap.
EE already promised to double speeds in 10 cities, including London, Birmingham and Edinburgh, but has today promised a boost for Derby and Nottingham too.
Increased speeds can reach up to 150Mbps in theory — nearly twice the previous max of 80Mbps — but you can expect to get more like 24-30Mbps. The higher speeds are available to all customers from tomorrow for free.
EE also promises “speed-based plans” later this year. Details are yet to be confirmed, but it sounds like 4G is about to get a whole lot more complicated, rather like paying different amounts for different broadband speeds.
EE has explained details of its new shared and pay as you go deals. You can share up to five devices with friends, family or whoever, starting at £12 on top of your regular contract. If you own a tablet and want extra-fast data, you can add it to your EE contract for an extra £5 per month.
Pay as you go data starts from £15 for a data SIM for 2GB of Internet. PAYG and shared deals go on sale on 17 July.
And EE today announced Cash on Tap, a partnership with Mastercard that lets you pay for stuff in shops with your mobile, tapping an NFC phone on the till as you would with a contactless credit card. You can make payments of up to £20, in 230,000 shops, including McDonald’s, Boots, and
Greggs — and EE will give you £10 just for using it once.
