Disable ’tilt to wake’ on Android Wear

Taking advantage of the various sensors found within Android Wear watches, Google had built a feature to automatically light up the screen when you lifted your arm and turned the screen towards you.

The feature is handy for a quick glance at the time or any pending notifications, but it can also be a battery drain.

Once your watch has received the latest Android Wear update (5.0.1), and you’ve updated the companion app on your Android device, you’ll have the option to disable this behavior.

  • Launch the Android Wear app on your Android device.
  • Tap on the Settings gear along the top of the screen.
  • Slide the switch located next to “Tilt to wake screen” to the Off position.

With the option disabled, you can lift your wrist and twist it any way you like without fear of lighting up your watch’s screen. Turning on the screen now requires you to tap the screen, or press the button on the side (depending on the device you’re using).
