Nokia has promised that its existing Lumia phones will be getting fresh updates, including creepy gif-maker Cinemagraph, and Bluetooth file transfer.
Ahead of the iPhone 5 debut, Nokia is earnestly reminding customers on its official blog that the Lumia 900, 800 and 710 smart phones will continue to receive fresh software, albeit not the Windows Phone 8 upgrade that Lumia owners crave.
“Brand new, compelling updates are in the pipeline,” Nokia says. Expect updates to the Finnish firm’s Smart Group Shot software, and more camera tricks, plus a Cinemagraph app that will let you create images in which one part of the picture is moving. Here’s an example of one such twitching picture:
Creating gifs using smart phones is proving a popular pursuit. iOS app Cinemagram already lets iPhone owners get in on the action.
Meanwhile current Lumia gizmos will also be treated to a ringtone maker app, and the ability to send media files to any other phone via Bluetooth.
These new apps and features all sound relatively minor, though it’s good to see Nokia committing to support its current mobiles, even if it’s just with a few tweaks here and there.
The cloud that hangs over all Windows Phone customers however is the fact that no existing smart phones will be getting an update to Windows Phone 8. Nokia is at pains to remind owners of current Lumia phones that they’ll be getting the redesigned homescreen that comes with Windows Phone 8.
“Existing Lumia owners have plenty to look forward to and are definitely not being left behind,” Nokia pleads.
