Optus has announced a partnership with Cricket Australia that will give customers unmetered access to live stream international matches and Big Bash League games in time for summer.

From October 29, all Optus’ consumer and small business customers will get access to a free Cricket Australia Live Pass for access to matches streamed via mobile, tablet or laptop. As an added bonus, prepaid mobile customers and postpaid mobile customers on Optus’ newer My Plan Plus range of plans will be able to stream games without eating into their data allowance.

While Optus and other telcos are well-versed in offering content add-ons for home broadband customers, with both Optus and iiNet offering unmetered access to services such as Netflix, unmetered deals are relatively uncommon in the mobile space. With this latest Cricket Australia tie-in, Optus is no doubt hoping to lure new customers and compete more aggressively with rival telco deals, such as Virgin Mobile’s bonus data for Guvera music streaming.

According to Optus, customers will be able to use their CA Live Pass on cricket.com.au or the CA Live App to view more than 70 scheduled match days including the Test Series between Australia, New Zealand and the West Indies, the One-Day and T20 Series between Australia and India, and Big Bash League games.

Customers will also get access to bonus content such as extended match highlights, and can also use the Live Pass on Optus mobile broadband or home broadband (though this will not be unmetered). The Pass is normally available for AU$4.99 for a Day Pass or AU$29.99 for a full year.

Live Streaming is available to watch within Australia on iOS7 and iOS8 devices and devices using Android 4.0 and up, though Optus says there may a slight delay of up to 30 seconds.
