Asus is preparing a Windows Phone, and is just waiting for the right time to launch it, Pocket-Lint reports.
Asked whether the company would make a Windows Phone, Benson Lin, global head of Asus’ handheld division, said: “We are very close with Microsoft. When we think it is the right time of course we will do it.” He made the announcement last week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
So far the company has focused on Android handsets and tablets, often being the first to roll out the latest update. And good news if you’re a fan of its Android offerings, as it shows no signs of slowing down. It could even be the first to rollout Android Jelly Bean — the version 5.0 of the operating system.
Lin also told TechRadar: “Asus is very close to Google, so once they have Android 5.0 I think there will be a high possibility that we will be the first wave to offer the Jelly Bean update.”
Though maybe it could kill two birds with the same stone, as Android Jelly Bean is rumoured to run Windows 8. It’s still a way off though, with Ice Cream Sandwich taking its precious time to come to most Android handsets. Early in the year, it was estimated to be on less than 1 per cent of Android devices. That will have increased in the two months since, but I’d bet it’s still pitifully low. Disappointingly, few ICS phones were shown off last week at Mobile World Congress, the biggest phone show in the world.
Asus looks like it’s cosying up to both Microsoft and Google, which is a smart move in my book. Should the company make a Windows Phone handset? And would you buy it? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook page.
