Apple is testing a 6

Apple is expected to announce two new iPhones on Tuesday, but seems it’s already working on its next handset after that. And it might be mahoosive, if this report is to be believed.

The next-iPhone-but-one could feature a 6-inch screen, according to the Wall Street Journal. That’s bigger than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and Sammy’s device isn’t exactly small.

Apple has “begun evaluating a plan to offer iPhones with screens ranging from 4.8 inches to as high as 6 inches”, according to the report. Either way, it’ll be much bigger than the 4-inch iPhone 5.

The same sources said Apple is also experimenting with new screen sizes for the iPad, which we’ve heard before.

Mobiles have been getting bigger over the last few years, with the iPhone 5 being overshadowed by its high-end rivals. Samsung has raced ahead in terms of market share as well, becoming the world’s biggest maker of phones, so Apple could be plotting ways to catch it up.

Apple is already said to be readying a budget handset in the form of the iPhone 5C. This is aimed at seeing off competition from the likes of the wallet-friendly Google Nexus 4. Hopefully we’ll see the iPhone 5S get some super powers to stand apart from its little brother. Fingerprint recognition, anyone?

Of course, it could be nothing comes of this. Companies often test devices of all shapes and sizes, then discards them. A bigger screen would also sap the battery much quicker. iOS 7 has already proved quite a drain — according to developers I know who’ve been using it — and it’s unlikely Apple would want to sacrifice battery life.

Or it could go for a multi-size screen approach, with devices to suit all. It offers iPods in a range of capacities and prices, after all.

Apple is holding an event in China on Wednesday, the day after its announcement for the UK, Europe and the US. So it seems it’s broadening its horizons, mobile-wise.
