Android KitKat hits HTC One in the UK

KitKat is here for the HTC One! If you own HTC’s flagship, go to Settings > About > Software Updates > Check now, and you should be able to bring the chocolatey delights of KitKat to your blower.

HTC confirmed the news in a tweet. I’ve asked whether the One’s little brother, the HTC One Mini, will also get the jump to KitKat, and will update this story if I hear back.

The One was supposed to get KitKat last month. Better late than never.

The update is a 308MB download, so better make sure you’re on a Wi-Fi connection, unless you have unlimited data in your contract. Android 4.4 KitKat is the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system. With it, you can type the name of a local business into your phonebook, and it’ll look it up as if it was in your contacts all along. Google Hangouts also replaces Messaging as your default SMS app.

Google’s KitKat Cloud Print service is included, so you can wirelessly connect to printers on your Wi-Fi network. The update also lets the One use a wider variety of Bluetooth profiles.

Manufacturers like HTC and Samsung ‘skin’ Android on their devices, so it takes longer for the latest updates to become compatible. Android KitKat launched back at the end of October, for example, yet only a handful of phones have it at the moment. The best way to get the latest OS updates on Android is to buy a Google-made blower SIM free — that way you negate any delays with the network or manufacturer.

Have you tried Android KitKat on your HTC One? How does it run? Or are you still waiting to see the download? Are these delayed updates hampering Android? What can be done about it? Let me know in the comments, or on our always up to date Facebook page.
