Usually when we refer to something as a Mickey Mouse phone, we’re not being generous. Today is different. Disney. Japan. Android. Smart phone. Boom — four of our favourite things, coming together like two dogs hoovering up a piece of spaghetti, as Disney stamps its distinctively eared brand on an Android phone.
The Disneyphone will run version 2.2 of Google’s mobile operating system, Android. Sadly it’s only available in Japan — yet another reason why the Japanese are just so much better than us.
Our Japanese is a little rusty but, from what we can translate, the Mickeyphone has a 9.6-megapixel camera and a ‘mobile wallet’, so you’d be able to pay for things with the phone. The press release also mentions 3D, which leads us to think this is a Disneyfied version of the Sharp Galapagos 003SH, currently offering a glasses-free 3D 3.8-inch screen to Japanese phone users.
Disney is getting behind 3D in cinemas with Tron: Legacy, Cars 2 and Toy Story 3 all making their big screen debuts in three dimensions. It’s also raiding the vaults to 3Dify Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King this year, spreading the message of patriarchal hegemony to new generations.
There are six designs of the Disneyphone available: mouse-patterned white, pink, gold, the Disney castle, Minnie Mouse polka dots and a generic plant print. Fingers crossed for future versions with each of the seven dwarfs on, or stuck-on flappy Dumbo ears.
