Android 4.1 may be heading to Samsung’s Galaxy S3 as early as next month.
Samsung has confirmed the Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S3 as soon as October, according to a story from CNET UK. The company reportedly told CNET UK directly that “the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system will be available on the Galaxy S3 from October.”
In the U.S., however, CNET couldn’t get Samsung to spill the same beans.
A company representative officially told us: “Samsung Mobile has not determined which devices will be eligible for the Jelly Bean software update. We will share that information publicly as soon as the product road map is confirmed.”
The rep did add that it’s “definitely possible that Jelly Bean has been announced for the European market/variant of Galaxy S III and not the U.S.” He explained that the process for approving and rolling out new software differs from region to region where Samsung phones are sold.
If so, it sounds like Galaxy S3 owners in the U.S. will have to wait a while longer for the latest flavor of Android.
No other details were revealed, such as an exact launch date for the S3’s Jelly Bean jump. But CNET UK said the update is expected to launch for SIM-free handsets first.
Android 4.1.1 recently started rolling out in the U.S. for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G via Sprint. Samsung revealed today that it expects to sell 30 million Galaxy S3 handsets by the end of this year.
