Amazon Fire tablet owners are finally seeing the benefits of Jeff Bezos’ decision to acquire the Washington Post.
Starting Thursday, people who own the Fire tablet will have exclusive, free access to the new Washington Post tablet app for the next six months. Neither Amazon nor the Post said when the app might be available on other platforms.
Bezos, Amazon’s CEO, acquired the Washington Post in a $250 million deal in 2013. He bought the Post and its other newspaper operations through an entity that’s separate from Amazon.
Since acquiring the Post, Bezos has said that he will take a hands-off approach, but would attempt to bring some Amazon ideas into the mix. He specifically said he wants to follow Amazon’s ideals of “put the customer first. Invent. And be patient.”
It also appears he wants to give some of his Amazon customers some preferential treatment in the meantime.
The new Washington Post app includes a “pinch view” to flip through the paper as if it were in print in front of the user. In addition, the Post editorial team will release two editions per day at 5 a.m. ET and 5 p.m. ET.
The new Washington Post app is available now in the Amazon Appstore
