New rumors suggest the Xperia Z5 might not be all that different from the Xperia Z3 (pictured).

Sony’s next big smartphone could come in the form of the 5.5-inch Xperia Z5 and may be here as soon as September, at least according to one rumor.

The Mobipicker site claims that this Xperia Z5 will feature a 1080p HD display, a 20.7-megapixel rear camera, and 32GB of internal storage. Like its predecessor, the Xperia Z4, this Z5 could also draw power from a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor.

While these supposed specs are enough to keep pace with many of today’s top Android phones, like this, the Xperia Z5 would have a tough time contending with tomorrow’s key devices. In fact, there’s nothing in the hardware that raises the bar from the Xperia Z4.

This particular rumor doesn’t seem totally compelling. If it’s true, there would only be six months separating the launch of the Z4 and Z5, and the two would be nearly identical specs-wise, with just a jump from a 5.2-inch to 5.5-inch display, making for a very minor hardware evolution.

Where we could see a change, however, is in the form of general aesthetics. Rumors surfacing back in April indicated that Sony might be ready to scrap the cold, angular design of its smartphones. These older rumors also said that the Z5 would include a beefier Snapdragon 820 CPU (which isn’t officially out yet), 4GB RAM, and a fingerprint scanner. In other words, the new gossip doesn’t line up with the old.

A September launch would place a new Sony smartphone on the market at the same time we see Apple and Samsung’s latest products. What’s more, LG is allegedly prepping its next killer phone for the second half of 2015 too.

Sony didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple could unveil two new iPhones this year — one with a 4.7- or 4.8-inch screen, the other with a 5.5-inch display, according to recent rumors. Assuming those rumors are true, the larger edition is reportedly facing production delays over its battery, claims Taiwanese news site Commercial Times.

Apple wants to outfit the larger phone with a thin body, according to the Commercial Times, as reported by GforGames. But that goal apparently poses challenges for battery makers. Smartphone batteries typically are 2.8mm to 2.9mm thick. But the battery for the big-screened iPhone would need to be 2mm or less.

As such, the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 may not see the light of day until 2015, or at least until battery makers can meet Apple’s strict requirements. The smaller-screened iPhone would presumably still roll out in September per Apple’s usual launch time frame.

Since the term “5.5-inch iPhone 6” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, Apple suppliers have supposedly already dubbed it the iPhone Air, says Commercial Times. But the report refers to that label as a “nickname,” so it’s not one that Apple will necessarily adopt.

For now, file all of this in the rumor department. But given the huge demand for large-screen phones, it’s a safe bet Apple will bump up the screen size on at least one new iPhone this year.

HTC may soon introduce a new member of the Desire family, perhaps as soon as Mobile World Congress. A leaked image and basic hardware specifications have surfaced online, indicating that HTC is readying another sizable smartphone.

According to a “reliable” Engadget source, the Desire 8 is a midrange experience with a large, 5.5-inch display. Presumably powered by Android 4.4, the details could include a 13-megapixel rear camera, front-facing 5-megapixel shooter, dual speakers, and dual-SIM support. So far, that sounds fairly high end to us. The rumor also suggests a plastic body in multiple color options (like red, orange, yellow, and cyan blue), and on-screen navigation buttons.

If you look closely at the screenshot, you’ll see a March 18 date and Beijing location, a hint that HTC could hold a press event on that Tuesday rather than use Mobile World Congress for its debut. The latter is a much larger world stage and takes place in late February, though HTC may decide to aim its product at Asia first with a more localized reveal. Either way, CNET will be in Barcelona come February 23 and will have first-hand coverage of the goings-on.
