This is what the upcoming GoPro Karma drone looks like, according to self-proclaimed “GoPro addict” Konrad Iturbe.
The teenaged Madrid resident tweeted the photo earlier this week, snagging it from the GoPro subreddit where it had been posted earlier. The original post and the user were subsequently deleted, Iturbe told CNET in an email exchange.
As Mashable’s Raymond Wong points out in his earlier coverage, the drone bears a strong resemblance to one featured in the teaser for the animated movie “The Secret Life of Pets,” which is heavy with GoPro product placement.
GoPro did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the image. And we ultimately won’t know what its first drone looks like before it’s officially unveiled. But — assuming the image is reasonably accurate — here are a few conclusions we can draw from it:
- The camera in the photo is a Hero4-era model, so we’d hope that compatibility with GoPro’s upcoming Hero5 would be enabled via a swappable mount.
- It looks like the camera is being held by a 3-axis motorized gimbal. That, and the front positioning, would be good because the legs or propellers would not be in the shot.
GoPro CEO Nick Woodman reaffirmed earlier this week that Karma drone will be available before the end of year. The company has already released footage from the drone (below), which would cost around $2,000 (based on GoPro’s earlier sweepstakes disclosure).
