Nexus 7 II could launch as soon as this month

The next Nexus could be with us within weeks. New reports suggest the next generation of the 7-inch tablet — apparently dubbed the Nexus 7 II — will be launched in late July or early August.

Google is once again teaming up with Asus to build the tablet, which will showcase the latest Android software, DigiTimes reports.

The Nexus 7 II is expected to pack 1,980×1,200 pixels into the 7-inch screen, with a quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor underneath, a 1.2-megapixel camera on the front, and a 5-megapixel camera on the back.

Previous leaks also suggest the Nexus 7 II could be 4G, for faster Internet connection on the go.

Manufacturers in Taiwan are reported to be sceptical that the new tablet will sell as many as some think, with the low price offset by the growth in competition.

The new Nexus is expected to cost between $200 and $250 in the US. The current model costs £160 here in the UK, or £240 with 3G. Fingers crossed the second generation sticks with this friendly price, especially as it has more competition than the previous model did. Where the original Nexus 7 was one of the only smaller tablets, the new update will take on rivals such as the iPad mini and assorted Android slates such as the 8-inch Galaxy Tab 3.
