Samsung takes aim at Apple’s tablet top spot

Samsung is anticipating selling twice as many tablets this year as in 2012, and the company is on the hunt for Apple’s number one spot.

Speaking at an Analysts’ Day event held in Seoul, Korea, Samsung’s head of mobile JK Shin said that the company was on track to sell over 40 million tablets this year — more than double the number sold last year.

Shin revealed that Samsung is looking to take Apple’s crown as the top tablet manufacturer, saying that it wants to be the “most beloved” company in mobile.

Samsung certainly has its work cut out for it. Apple has already sold 48.2 million iPads, and analysts are predicting solid sales for the end of the year, with two new iPads on offer. Conservative estimates suggest that iPad sales could be over 72 million units by the end of the year.

But Samsung is certainly on the rise. Research firm IHS said that Apple lost a little market share last quarter, with 29.7 per cent of the tablet market, down from 33.5 per cent for the previous year’s quarter. For the same period, Samsung’s share rose from 19.9 per cent to 22.2 per cent.
