The Proto-X added some affordable fun to the quadcopter category.

LAS VEGAS — Proto-X made waves with its matchbox-sized nano quadcopter when it first launched in 2014, a clever little package at an easy to swallow price of $30 (around AU$40; £20). Since then Hobbico, the company behind Proto-X, has added two new models to the range, the Proto-X SLT and the Proto-X FPV.

The Proto-X SLT is a souped-up version of the original model, coming in at the same size but with a better 2.4GHz radio controller and the ability to do flip tricks “at the push of a button” (some skill may be required). It’s also easier to fly with an Auto-Upright system and is compatible with other SLT (Secure Link Technology) controllers.

The Proto-X FPV is slightly larger with a 4.5-inch screen on the controller.

The biggest new model is the Proto-X FPV which adds a 720p HD camera with a range of 240 feet. The FPV is a bigger model but still very small at just 4.5 by 4.5 inches (11.4 by 11.4cm) and weighing in at 2 ounces (57 grams). The FPV takes microSD to record video up to a maximum of 32GB.

The Proto-X FPV has a three-axis gyro and three accelerometers to fly with good stability for video. The radio controller also features an embedded 4.5-inch screen so it offers stand alone video and recording rather than needing to sync to a smartphone. A sun hood is included so you can still view the live video feed in bright outdoor conditions.

The Proto-X SLT is just $10 more than the original at $40 (roughly £25 or AU$50). The Proto-X FPV is a more expensive proposition, but still very reasonable compared to many bigger competitors at a street price in the US of around $225 (AU$280; £150).
