Pierre Cardin tablet is neither high street nor high end

Want a tablet but can’t stomach the thought of the off-the-rack Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the despicably mainstream iPad 2? The Pierre Cardin PC-7006 designer Android tablet might be for you.

Straight out of the Pierre Cardin stable, this 7-inch Android tablet actually looks rather chunky. It’s 14mm thick, much girthier than the 9.7-inch iPad 2, which measures a shade under 9mm acrossways.

Its design puts us very much in mind of the iPhone 4 — a squarish rectangle sits beneath a broad stripe of silver banding around the edges, and there’s a single, circular ‘home’ button beneath the screen. We’d be lying if we said it looked particularly good, but we’re stupid pen-protector-wearing nerds, so what do we know?

What we can say is it comes with Pierre Cardin’s signature scrawled across the back, which we imagine will be enough for some people. Oh, and you’ll also get a case, and a slick presentation box.

Some elements of the PC-7006’s spec sheet are a little underwhelming too. For example, it’s running on Android 2.2 Froyo, which isn’t even the most recent iteration of the mobile version of Android, let alone the tablet-specific 3.2 Honeycomb. There’s a 1.3-megapixel camera on the front, but there isn’t one on the back.

The one interesting thing is the price — this tablet will set you back £275, making it cheaper than the iPad 2. But we’re still not convinced it would be great value.
