Google’s smashing 7-inch slate could soon be set for a sequel, with a Korean analyst telling our sister site CNET News that screen makers are gearing up to supply displays for a new Nexus 7 tablet in June.
Calling the tablet the Nexus 7 II, IHS researcher Ricky Park says it’ll pack a better-than-Full HD 1,920×1,200-pixel screen — a serious boost over the Nexus 7’s 1,280×800-pixel effort. If true, its new pixel density of 323 pixels per inch is retina-grade.
The screen will be supplied by Japan Display and AUO, but the tablet itself will apparently by made by Taiwanese manufacturer Quanta, rather than Asus, which built the previous generation.
Park reckons it’ll be on sale in the third quarter of the year, which means Android fans should have it in their hands by the end of August. Gadget gossip site Digitimes reckons it’ll be even earlier, in July, and that a 16GB version will set American punters back $229 (£145).
That’s a little more than the current generation, which is $199 or £159. If Google does nudge up the price, expect something like £179 here in the UK. The original Nexus 7 appeared in July last year, so this doesn’t feel like wild speculation.
Google has used Nexus launches in the past to show off new versions of its Android software, and we’re due an update — probably to 4.3 Jelly Bean, which the Big G demurred from unveiling at its recent I/O conference.
