iPad 3 will have 3D display, Hollywood source claims

It’s a “dead cert” that the iPad 3 will have a 3D-capable screen, according to a ‘Hollywood insider’ who spoke to tech blog RCR Wireless.

RCR Wireless states the Hollywood source “went on to say that the big film studios were currently running around like blue-arsed flies trying to gear up to release plenty of 3D content in time for Apple’s next launch”. That’s an amusing image given Apple’s tumultuous relationship with movie studios in the past.

Putting their films onto iTunes has proven a pretty good deal for film studios, but it’s still a bizarre notion that Apple could be swaying their content production in any way. The rumour seems stranger still given how careful Apple remains about details of future product launches.

On the other hand, you can bet your Levi’s that Steve Jobs would love to get one up on the Nintendo 3DS, a portable gaming console that offers decent 3D images without the need to wear silly glasses. The iPad 3 wouldn’t necessarily be the first Apple product to add a 3D display either, with the iPhone 5 possibly going down that road too.

This isn’t the first rumour to emerge concerning the iPad 3’s screen. We’ve already heard that the iPad 3 could use a super-bright AMOLED display, as seen on the likes of the Nokia X7 and Samsung Galaxy S 2, but on a bigger scale.

Don’t get into a frenzy yet, though. The iPad 2 hasn’t been out for long, and it could be spring next year before the iPad 3 surfaces. That means there’s plenty of time for other rumours to emerge too.

What do you think of the latest loaf to emerge from the Apple rumour mill? Is Hollywood making up stories again? Do you think it’s more likely that the next iPad will actually have a time-travel feature? Or would you rather see a dedicated button for ordering black turtlenecks?
