If you’re crafty, good with power tools and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, you can build your very own BB-8 droid from “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” for just $150 (about £100, AU$190).

Industrial designer Christian Poulsen modified a standard v 1.0 Sphero robotic rolling toy into a fully functional BB-8 that rolls around the floors of his home.
To accomplish this geektastic feat, he carefully cut the Sphero in half, making sure not to cut through the circuitry (easier said than done, no doubt), and planted a magnet inside that holds the head onto the body. Of course, you’ll need to fabricate the head yourself, which could prove a difficult task for non-designers out there, but with a little skill and a lot of patience, you might just end up with an awesome-looking BB-8 droid to patrol the deserts in your house.
Poulsen posted a how-to guide on his Makezine page that shows how to build your own BB-8 Sphero droid. And you can check out Poulsen’s build for yourself in the video above. Now, can someone show us how to make our own life-size Wookiee on the cheap?
