When I first heard about the Garmin Head-Up Display a little over a year ago, I thought it sounded cool. Like, really cool. A gizmo that projects GPS driving directions right onto your windshield so you can keep your eyes on the road? Yes, please.
Ah, but a $150 price tag on the hardware and a required $50 navigation app? No, thank you.
Good news: Ending tomorrow, or when supplies run out, Groupon has the Garmin Head-Up Display for $67.49, shipped. That’s after applying coupon code SAVE10 SALE10 at checkout. Best price elsewhere: around $92 from Amazon.
The HUD pairs with your smartphone, sits on your dashboard, and displays navigation data on a piece of transparent, reflective film you apply to your windshield. (You can also use an included reflector that clips to the device itself.) The idea, of course, is to help you reach your destination without having to look away from the road.
Cool, right? CNET’s Antuan Goodwin thought so , awarding the HUD 3.5 stars and praising its simple setup and effective reduction of driver distraction. His big complaint: price.
With today’s deal, though, you’re effectively getting the gizmo for one-third the original cost. That’s in part because Garmin now offers a free navigation app: Garmin HUD, available for Android and iOS. (The unit is also compatible with Navigon apps if you happen to favor those. Alas, no love for Apple Maps or Google Maps, a definite bummer.)
If you routinely rely on GPS to navigate you from point A to point B, this would be a mighty nice accessory to keep in the car. Distracted driving is extremely dangerous, so I’m in favor of anything that helps you keep your eyes on the road. Especially if I’m the guy coming in the other direction.
