Borders has sent an email to customers advising that all stores in Australia will be closing down.
The email, which bears the alarming all-caps subject line, “GOING OUT OF BUSINESS! ALL LOCATIONS CLOSING!”, tells customers that everything — books, CDs, DVDs and more — will be 20 to 40 per cent off. Recently, we visited the Borders store in Hornsby, which was one of the first to go; if that is any indication, you may even be able to pick up some cheap shelving displays and cashboxes.
A small banner at the bottom of the email states, “It’s business as usual at Borders.com.au”.
However, news has come in today that Borders US will no longer be filling ebook orders directly; instead, Borders customers will be redirected to the Kobo website to complete their book purchases. Customers are now also able to transfer their existing Borders libraries across to Kobo accounts.
Kobo Australia representative Malcolm Neil has told CNET Australia that he does not yet know if this solution will be rolled out for customers down under.
