Acer today launched the Iconia 510 tablet in the Australian market, asking AU$549 for the 32GB stock keeping unit.
The latest in Acer’s range of Android-based offerings, the 10.1-inch Iconia 510, sports a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of RAM and, at 689 grams, it is 10 per cent lighter than last year’s Iconia 500. It also runs on the latest version of Android, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich. JB Hi-Fi, the Good Guys and Radio Rentals will sell the 32GB model at launch, while EB Games will sell a 16GB version for AU$499.
Acer is also celebrating the device’s 15-hour battery life, claiming it can hit this class-leading figure playing videos and music, but only when the Wi-Fi connection is disabled. Most of the popular tablet devices are rated at between 10-12 hours of battery life.
The user interface of the Iconia 510 remains largely Google’s design, though Acer does add a few tweaks. Similar to last year’s models, the 510 employs a shortcut panel, known as the Acer Ring. A button at the bottom of the screen launches the Ring, which offers three customisable shortcut positions and a quick entry to the main system settings. Default options, like web browser bookmarks, are fanned out to the side for easy access.
