LG 2019 OLED TVs start at $2,500, ship in April, just like last year

In the last few years LG’s OLED TVs have taken the picture quality crown, and I don’t expect that to change in 2019. And the pricing isn’t changing either. The initial prices and shipping dates of LG’s newest OLED TVs are largely the same as last year: Not cheap. The most-affordable so far, the 55-inch …

Qualcomm’s not a monopoly, Japan decides after decadelong investigation

Qualcomm isn’t a monopoly after all, a Japanese regulatory body said Friday, reversing its decision from about a decade ago.  The Japan Fair Trade Commission this week canceled a cease-and-desist order from 2009 that affected Qualcomm licensing in Japan, effectively declaring that Qualcomm wasn’t guilty of the charges against it. JFTC officials said the decision is “unusual,” according to a …

Facebook’s loss may be Telegram’s gain. The founder of the messaging service said Thursday that people flocked to Telegram during the long Facebook outage that knocked out not only its namesake social network, but also corporate siblings Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. “I see 3 million new users signed up for Telegram within the last 24 hours,” Telegram boss CEO Pavel …

Sony Xperia 1 goes up for preorder on Amazon for $1,000

If you’ve been eagerly anticipating Sony’s recently announced flagship phone, the Xperia 1, your chance to click “preorder now” on Amazon is here — though not if you were expecting it at a lower price than $1,000. The new Galaxy S10 is $900, so $1,000 is relatively competitive for a flagship these days, but possibly not for a phone that …

Instead, Microsoft on Friday sued the Taiwan-based manufacturing behemoth Hon Hai Precision …

Leica Q2 is the camera other compacts want to be when they grow up

Leica is nothing if not consistent. Despite its new 47-megapixel sensor and even more streamlined design, shooting with the Leica Q2 feels exactly like shooting with its predecessor from 2015, the Leica Q. It maintains the Q’s performance and photo quality, simply writ larger. Given that the original Q was one of my favorite compact cameras ever, that puts it …

5G will rule on high

If you’re planning to buy a phone later this year, you may not be able to avoid 5G.  Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon last week predicted that by this holiday season or the Chinese New Year in early 2020, all major flagship phones will run 5G — and there may not even be an option to buy a high-end device without …

5G is still a little magic, a little smoke and mirrors

The scene on the big display in front of me looks like something from Grey’s Anatomy.  A team of doctors and nurses lean over a patient who’s draped with a white cloth, while a TV screen beside the operating table displays a video of the patient’s colon. Suddenly, a yellow line appears on that video, showing the doctors where to …

5G has been the favorite buzzword at MWC here in Barcelona for the past few years, but 2019 is when it truly arrived. Now that it’s here, all anyone can talk about are foldable phones.  The next-generation network technology promises blazing speeds, smooth and stable connections and new possibilities for VR, self-driving cars and robotics.
