Vuzix Blade test

The Vuzix Blade was promised back at CES 2018: The Alexa-connected smart glasses, which I demoed then, were like an updated Google Glass that promised a larger screen and assistant modes. The Vuzix Blade is now the first product I’ve gotten a chance to test in 2019. So far, what I’ve realized is that smart …

Xiaomi might be making a foldable tablet device of its own

CES is right around the corner — which means we’re spending the days leading up to the show neck deep in rumors and leaks. We’ve already been given a sneak preview of what might be the Galaxy S10. Now, we’re getting a look at something different: a bigger, bolder foldable tablet. That really folds. Can’t speak to the authenticity of …

VESA updates DisplayHDR logo spec to accommodate laptop, OLED screens

Since its inception, VESA’s (the Video Electronic Standards Association) DisplayHDR logo-certification program for monitors has been a clear-cut mix of competence requirements (DisplayHDR 600 and 1000) and marketing desperation (DisplayHDR 400). But with the CES 2019 announcement of DisplayHDR 500, DisplayHDR True Black 400 and DisplayHDR True Black 500, somehow they’ve managed to make things more confusing than necessary. There …

Asus ProArt PA90 mini desktop for creatives reappears for CES 2019

If the Asus ProArt PA90 looks familiar, it’s because it first appeared in October as part of Intel’s announcements for its ninth-gen Core i-series processors. The mini desktop also bears a passing resemblance to Apple’s Mac Pro, just not as round. Like the Mac, the ProArt is aimed at creative professionals who need the power and performance of a desktop, …

CES 2019 preview: PCs, laptops, tablets and gaming

Bigger, faster and, yes, more expensive computers are coming to CES 2019. A lot of that will be driven by Nvidia’s new laptop graphics cards, known (unofficially for now) as the RTX 20-series. There will also be plenty to see on the more modest end of the price spectrum, from Chromebooks to budget two-in-one hybrids.  For sheer numbers, you can’t …

Ready or not, the 2019 International CES — aka Nerds in Vegas — is just around the corner. And for TV hardware nerds like me, it’s like a second Christmas. CES is the place where TV makers unveil their latest creations, both “stuff we’re going to sell this year” and “wacky concepts and new tech we may never sell, but …

CES 2019 won’t be a big leap forward for TVs. Here’s why

The consumer electronics industry has cycles. CES, the annual tech jamboree held in Las Vegas each January, reveals where we are in this cycle. Some years there are revolutions, like 4K TVs, quantum dots or OLED. Other years there are evolutions: a bigger TV or a thinner one. Sometimes it’s a new TV operating system. Certainly not flashy, but they’re …

LG CineBeam Laser 4K projector delivers voice control for CES 2019

Last year, the HU80K projector made a splash at CES for its small, tote-it-anywhere design. This year, LG plans to show its new sibling, the Cinebeam Laser 4K HU85L, which adds voice control via the remote and the company’s ThinQ platform. It packs the same compact projector into a more typical, handle-free design — LG calls it “subtle” so it …
