The cord

It was too good to be true, and we all knew it. YouTube TV, previously CNET’s favorite live TV streaming service, just announced its latest price hike, and it’s a doozy. It went from $40 to $50, a whopping 25 percent jump. I say “previously” because “favorite” is based primarily on value — namely, channels …

Galaxy Fold, one of the most exciting devices we’ve seen, arrives in two weeks

Update, Sept. 18: We now have a retail model of the Galaxy Fold and have begun to review it. The Galaxy Fold, Samsung’s first foldable phone, blew the top off the mobile industry when we first heard of it in February. Since then, this foldable device, which we’ve never seen in person (this YouTube video might be it), has been beset …

Testing Verizon’s early 5G speeds was a mess, but I’m still excited about our data future

A week ago, I trudged through a cold drizzle, coffee clutched desperately in hand, to test Verizon’s new 5G network the day after it launched in parts of downtown Chicago and Minneapolis. After using it for six solid hours on the Moto Z3 and its 5G Moto Mod in Chicago, I walked away with a clearer understanding of the biggest issues facing Verizon and other …

Motorola’s 5G phone may be a first, but a foldable Razr is a more important win

Motorola can boast about making the first commercial phone running on a live 5G network, but I’d bet money that its rumored foldable update to the iconic Razr phone will leave the most lasting mark. Both are key devices in 2019’s mobile story, a landscape that’s in the midst of tremendous evolution.  5G is the next-generation data network poised to …

Thanks to Samsung and Verizon, 5G is about to all get up in your face

Ready or not, 5G data is at your doorstep. Samsung and Verizon made that fact crystal clear last week. First, Verizon lit up its 5G network, claiming it to be the world’s first. Two days later, the largest phone maker on the planet began selling the Galaxy S10 5G, its first 5G device, in Samsung’s home country of South Korea. These two events prove that 5G is off to …

Verizon’s 5G network launch was rocky at best, but it has a plan

This week I had the privilege of being one of the first journalists to test Verizon’s first mobile 5G network, which launched in Chicago and Minneapolis on Wednesday. Although Verizon’s 5G launch revealed deep issues that the carrier will need to address, the ability of 5G technology to profoundly change the way we use our phones is still just as relevant …

Verizon 5G map: Network now live in Chicago and Minneapolis

A week ahead of schedule, Verizon on Wednesday turned on its 5G network in parts of Chicago and Minneapolis. CNET went to Chicago to test it with the Moto Z3. To experience 5G, Verizon customers need to have a Motorola Moto Z3 phone with a 5G Moto Mod.  The addition, available now, costs about $200 and attaches magnetically to the phone. Customers on …

How to watch Astros baseball in 2019 without cable

After winning the World Series in 2017, the Houston Astros made it to the ALCS last season, where they fell to the Boston Red Sox, who then went on to win it all. In the last two regular seasons, the Astros won more than 100 games and consecutive AL West titles.  The Astros are again favorites again to win their …
