We’re still a few weeks away from Prime Day — which officially starts on July 15 this year — but Amazon is already dropping prices all over the place. Right now, the company is offering its best-ever deal on Apple’s second-gen AirPods with the wireless charging case. It’s usually priced at $199 (£199, AU$319) but is currently going for $180.

CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of the products featured on this page.

The big deal: The second-gen AirPods with the wireless charging case now cost $180.

For context: The base model second-gen AirPods, which come with the regular Lightning-connector charging case, remain priced at $160.

And: Amazon has a $10 discount on the standalone wireless charging case. Usually, priced at $80, it now costs $70.

The second-gen AirPods feature a few minor but worthwhile improvements over the original, including always-on voice recognition and the long-awaited wireless charging case. Like the previous model, they’re a top-notch headset for making calls, indoors and out. Apple’s new H1 chip also allows for super-fast connections with all of your Apple devices, rock-solid wireless connectivity, and an hour more talk time.

Amazon Prime Day kicks off on July 15 — but we’ve already spotted lots of deals. In recent weeks, we’ve seen discounts on a range of Amazon’s own devices including Kindles and e-readers, media streamers, Ring doorbells, security cameras and Echo smart speakers. This year’s Prime Day sale will run for 48 hours, the longest Prime Day sale ever, up from 36 hours in 2018.

This story was originally posted earlier, but the deal is still available.

Bluetooth speakers have become totally commoditized, but if you want good sound quality and durability you need to still pay up. Except for today: Amazon is offering the awesome UE Wonderboom for just $50This softball-sized Bluetooth speaker delivers great sound for its size, and it’s not only waterproof — it floats

Normally $99, it’s been widely discounted for the past few weeks for $60 to $65. But $50 is the lowest price we’ve seen — though that discount is limited to the deep blue and midnight blue colors. Just don’t get this one if you need an aux-in — it’s wireless only. Read the CNET review of the UE Wonderboom

Prefer something with a bit more oomph? The Wonderboom’s sibling speakers aren’t a “deal of the day,” but they’ve been nicely discounted in recent weeks, too.

UE Boom 2, $99 at Amazon ($80 off): For years, the UE Boom and its sequel, the Boom 2, have been our go-to choice for wireless speaker sound quality — but that came at a premium $199 price (since reduced to $180). Now this waterproof wonder is up to $80 off in some color combinations. Read the CNET review of the UE Boom 2

The Blast is basically the Boom 2, but with Alexa support.

UE Blast, $107 at Amazon ($73 off): The Blast is basically a Boom 2 that adds the Alexa voice assistant to the mix, with Wi-Fi capability in addition to standard Bluetooth. Yes, it only has a 3-star review on Amazon, but that’s probably because many of those reviews hit before the recent firmware update that added voice control for Spotify to the mix.

This speaker was $230 when it first debuted last year, but has since been marked down to $180 — but you can buy it now for just over $100. That’s just $8 for Alexa compatibility (versus the Boom 2), whether you use it or not. Read the CNET review of the UE Blast

Hey Cheeps, Rick is still on vacation for the few more days, but he’ll be back in this space soon. In the meantime, the rest of the CNET crew will be doing our best to fill his shoes, finding the best deals we can.

Unless you’ve been living under a deals rock for the last week or so, you know Amazon’s big Prime Day sales event happens on Monday, July 16. Amazon typically fills its virtual aisles with Amazon devices at steep discounts, but if you need a new 4K media streamer now, today’s deal from QVC (via slickdeals) is better than any Amazon price we’ve seen.

The Amazon Fire TV pendant-style 4K HDR streamer is available for just $44.96 with free shipping. That price is for new customers who use the coupon code “FIVE4U” at checkout. If you’ve already shopped at QVC or just don’t want to sign up for an account, you can grab the Fire TV without the code for $49.96.

Get to QVC PDQ

Disclaimer: CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of the products featured on this page.

For comparison, Amazon’s current price on Fire TV is $70, and the lowest it’s been to date is $50. Sure Amazon could discount it further on Prime Day but there’s no telling for sure, and we wouldn’t be surprised if Amazon reserved its best deals for the newer Fire TV Cube instead.

In my review I liked a lot of stuff about non-Cube Fire TV, in particular its voice capabilities thanks to Alexa. If you already have an Echo Dot or other Alexa speaker you can stream stuff and control some aspects of your TV hands-free, without having to pick up the remote. Overall I still prefer Roku, but at this price the Fire TV is a great alternative for 4K HDR TV owners who love Alexa.

Google originally didn’t plan to support touch screens for its mobile operating system, Android — and then along came the Apple iPhone.

Revealed last week as part of the latest legal battle between Apple and Samsung, a document called “Android Project Software Functional Requirements” described the concept for Android before the iPhone was unveiled. Android early on was based on Sun’s Java running under Linux and wasn’t keen on touch-screen support.

“Touchscreens will not be supported,” Google said in a copy of the July 2006 document received by CNET. “The product was designed with the presence of discrete physical buttons as an assumption. However, there is nothing fundamental in the product’s architecture that prevents the support of touchscreens in the future.”

Related stories

But that lack of support apparently changed after Steve Jobs presented the iPhone to the world in January 2007.

After the debut of the iPhone, Andy Rubin, then Google’s director of Android, reportedly nixed the phone that the company already had in the works, as described in Fred Vogelstein’s book “Dogfight: How Apple and Google Went to War and Started a Revolution.” That phone would have used physical keys instead of a touch-screen keyboard.

Google’s Android planning document also did an eventual about-face on the issue of touch-screen support. Apple launched the iPhone in June 2007. A major update to the Software Functional Requirements document made in November of 2007 added the following:

“A touch screen for finger-based navigation — including multitouch capabilities — is required. Stylus-based navigation is not supported.”

In the end, touch-screen support took a while to implement, AppleInsider noted. Launched in October 2008, the Android phone T-Mobile G1/HTC Dream included hardware support for multitouch but not actual touch typing. Software support for multitouch didn’t arrive until late 2009 with the launch of Android 2.0.

Last week, Apple stated its case in its latest patent-infringement lawsuit against Samsung in which the iPhone maker is seeking $2.19 billion in damages. Though aimed at Samsung, the suit is actually Apple’s way of accusing Google of stealing its ideas for the creation of Android. Testifying last week, a Google executive said that the company never copied features from the iPhone to use in Android.

You’ve got to love eBay. Yeah, it’s chock-full of reflecto-porn and dirty second-hand furniture, but every now and then it’s also a source for the latest and greatest gadgets — or at least cleverly described junk masquerading as such.

According to Engadget, one of the most curious recent additions to the auction site is the highly sought-after Motorola Droid, aka the Motorola Milestone. Its seller describes it as a pre-release version — one of five handsets that was intended for Motorola engineers. Apparently the phone is in perfect working order, runs Android 2.0 (Eclair), and is ready to activate.

Being a pre-release model, there are some differences between this and the final Droid. The seller says his product has a chrome bezel, not a black one, silver buttons instead of gold and ‘enhanced LED lighting’ on the front-facing buttons — whatever that means.

Obviously, the listing could turn out to be a big, fat hoax, but then again, it may not. At the time of writing, it’s reached a pretty reasonable $485 (£290), though with four days remaining on the auction, it could reach a quite ludicrous figure.

Familiarise yourself with the Milestone by checking some of our previous coverage, then head on over to eBay if you fancy a punt. Oh, and do let us know how you get on.
