This story is part of Gift Guide, our year-round collection of the best gift ideas.

The holiday season is here, and if you’re still looking for that perfect gift for a friend, family member or Secret Santa draw, look no further: A subscription to a streaming service is an almost guaranteed hit this year as we all hunker down for the winter.

That could mean signing your loved one up for Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Spotify, Apple Music or any of the growing list of others available for the first time, or it could mean paying for part of their existing subscription. Either way, a TV, movie or music streaming service is a great quarantine-friendly gift. And it’s one you can increasingly enjoy together, with features and extensions such as Teleparty (formerly called Netflix Party), Hulu Watch PartyDisney Plus GroupWatch and Amazon Prime Video Watch Party that let you watch and chat together from afar.

Here’s how to give each of the major TV and movie streaming services as a gift this year.

How to gift Disney Plus

If you’re looking for a great gift for someone with kids (or a grown-up who loves Star Wars, Marvel and Baby Yoda), Disney Plus lets you gift a year-long subscription for $70 (it usually costs $7 a month, so this saves you $14 over a year). After the year is up, the recipient will have the option to add their own payment details and continue subscribing.

To buy a gift subscription, go to Disney Plus’s website. When you make the purchase, you’ll provide an email address for the recipient, choose a delivery date and write them a message. On your chosen day, the recipient will get an email with instructions on how to redeem their gift.

One restriction here is that the person who receives the gift subscription must be a new subscriber, or willing to start a new account. It’s also only available for US subscribers.

Find out more about how to gift Disney Plus here. You can also read our Disney Plus review

How to gift Netflix

Netflix offers gift cards that can go toward creating a new account, or toward someone’s existing account. But you can’t buy them through Netflix itself. Instead, you’ll find the gift cards online at Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Target, NewEgg and Kroger, or in-store at Walmart, Target, Best Buy, CVS, Walgreens, Kroger, 7-Eleven, Dollar General and Safeway.

Gift card amounts range from $25 to $200, with different options on different sites (Amazon has them all, though). For reference, Netflix subscriptions range from $9 to $18 a month, depending on how many screens you want to be able to watch on at the same time, and if you want HD. If you buy online, some sites let you send it through email.

The recipient can redeem their gift card on Netflix’s website, and the amount is applied to their account as a gift balance. Netflix will notify them before the balance runs out.

We have more information on how Netflix gift cards work here. You can also read our Netflix review.

How to gift Hulu

Like Netflix, Hulu offers gift cards that you can buy through several retailers online or in-person, including Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Kroger and Paypal. Gift card amounts range from $25 to $100, depending on where you buy. Hulu costs $6 a month to subscribe to the ad-supported version, $12 a month to go ad-free, or $55 a month for Hulu Plus Live TV. The different retailers also offer choices between email delivery and a physical card.

The recipient can redeem their gift card at Hulu.com, or, if they already have an account, through their Account page on the app or website. If they are a new subscriber, their account will be cancelled after the gift card balance is up, unless they enter another form of payment.

How to gift HBO Max

While HBO used to offer gift cards for HBO Now, it appears that those have been discontinued with the launch of HBO Max (though if you already have one, you can still use it toward a Max subscription).

Unfortunately, if you want to give the gift of HBO Max, you’ll probably have to give a prepaid cash card that the recipient can put toward a subscription. Or, right now you can sign someone up for a six-month subscription to HBO Max right now for $70, which is 22% less than usual. To sign up, go to HBOMax.com and click “Sign up now.” With Wonder Woman 1984 arriving on the streaming service on Dec. 25 — and other movies like The Matrix 4 and Dune arriving to stream in 2021 — the timing is great for this gift.

How to gift Amazon Prime Video

Amazon currently doesn’t allow you to give a monthly Prime Video membership, which costs $8 a month on its own (and is already included with the cost of a Prime membership, which is $119 a year or $13 a month). However, if you want to gift a Prime membership as a whole, that includes Prime Video, you can buy someone a year of Prime for $119, or three months for $39, plus taxes. That’s more than enough time for them to binge all of Jack Ryan and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and try out all of the other Prime perks, like fast free Amazon delivery and music streaming.

To give someone a Prime subscription, go to Amazon.com/giftprime. You’ll be prompted to log in to your own Amazon account if you haven’t already, and choose if you want the one-year or three-month option. At checkout, you’ll enter the recipient’s email, the date you want it delivered, and a note.

How to gift Spotify

Get the music (or podcast) fan in your life a Spotify gift card. You can buy electronic gift cards (delivered by email) online at Target, NewEgg, Kroger and PayPal. You can also buy a physical Spotify gift card online at Amazon or Best Buy, or in-store at Walmart, Target, Staples, CVS, 7 Eleven, Kroger and Simon Malls. They come in amounts of $10, $30, $60 or $99. For context, A Spotify Premium individual plan costs $10 a month.

The only catch is that Spotify gift cards are only for Premium Individual plans — you can’t use them for Premium Student, Premium Family, Premium Duo or trial offers (find out how all the Spotify Premium plans compare here).

How to gift Apple Music

Like Spotify, you can’t gift a subscription to Apple Music, but you can give an Apple gift card that someone can apply toward their account to sign up.

Send an electronic gift card (delivered by email) so the recipient can redeem the amount on the card to their Apple ID balance. They can then use that money for an Apple Music subscription, or apps, games, iCloud storage or music and movie purchases.

If you’re an Apple user, you can send an electronic gift card by opening the App Store app on your iPhone or iPad, signing in, and going to your account. Tap Send Gift Card by Email, enter the recipient’s email, add a message and choose how much you want to send (you can customize any amount). You can send the gift that day or schedule it for another day.

Or, you can buy electronic or physical gift cards from Apple’s website. You can also find them online or in person at Best Buy, Target, Walmart and many other stores.

For more, read our comparison of Apple Music vs. Spotify.

Christmas is in a few days, which is awesome if you’re a kid, but terrifying if you’re an adult trying to ensure you can still get a delivery before the big day. It’s already way too late to count on standard shipping or even two-day shipping, but today is your last day to place an order with one-day shipping. The bottom line? Any last-minute holiday shopping needs to be done now. Fortunately, this is 2019 and you still have a slew of options. Amazon, Best Buy, Target and Walmart all offer one-day holiday shipping in one form or another, or the option to order gifts online and pick them up at the store. So no matter what you want to buy, as long as it’s in stock, you can probably get it before the holidays — as long as you act fast.

For example, you can score a $10 Walmart gift card with the purchase of select Nerf guns — though some are already out of stock, so act fast on those.

By the way, want to know the fine print on all the major retailers’ next-day shipping policies? Here you go:

  • Amazon: Free two-hour delivery on certain items for Prime members.
  • Best Buy: Free next-day delivery through the end of the holidays.
  • Target: Free guaranteed delivery by Christmas Eve.
  • Walmart: Many of these gifts are available for next-day shipping.

Below, we’ve rounded up the best deals still in effect (some are as good as or better than Black Friday and Cyber Monday), and we’re keeping the list updated right through the final shopping weekend. So bookmark this page and check back often.

Xbox One X bundle: $349

We now have the scoop on next year’s Xbox console, which Microsoft is calling the Xbox Series X. Our take? That’s a year away — so you need to be able to play Jedi: Fallen Order in the meantime. Fitbit Versa 2 smartwatch: $149

You save $50

Oct 2019

How many smartwatches can claim a battery that lasts for the better part of a week? Certainly not the Apple Watch. But the Versa 2 is a powerful fitness tracker/smartwatch combo that has earned nothing less than a CNET Editors’ Choice Award, and is now $70 off its usual $200 price tag. Read our Fitbit Versa 2 review

If you really like the idea of the Versa 2 but want to save a few dollars, you’re in luck. First off, you can buy the Versa 2 at Kohl’s for the same price and get $20 in Kohl’s cash for future purchases. The slightly older Fitbit Versa Lite is available for $100, down from its usual $160, and the original Versa is $130 at Kohl’s, with a $20 Kohl’s cash credit. (Our take? The Versa 2 is worth the extra cash for most folks.)

Buy Google Nest Hub for $80, get a free Nest Mini Speaker (Update: In Stores Only)

Big savings at Best Buy

Sadly, Best Buy’s “Buy two Nest Hubs for $100” deal is now kaput. But in its place is a pretty great substitute: Buy the Nest Hub at its current sale price of $80, and Best Buy will throw in a free Nest Mini speaker. Normally, if you purchased those two together, it would cost somewhere between $115 to $150. And there are no special codes needed: Just add the 8-inch Google Assistant-based smart display to your shopping cart, and you should see the Nest Mini in there, too.

This story is part of Mother’s Day Gift Guide. CNET editors round up the hottest gadgets for Mom this year.

OK, it’s crunch time: Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 12, which means your online-gift-ordering window is closing rapidly. Indeed, if Mom lives far away and you’re hoping to have something delivered, it’s time to act.

Fortunately, at least a few stores are positioned to help last-minute shoppers. Walmart, for example, offers free two-day shipping on orders of $35 or more, and there’s always the in-store pickup option as well. Amazon Prime subscribers can get two-day shipping on most items — possibly even one-day shipping, which would theoretically give you until Friday to pick a gift.

Indeed, you might want to head straight to Amazon’s Mother’s Day gift shop if you prefer to shop by category.

See it at Amazon

Need a little more help? Below I’ve rounded up some great gift ideas that, as of today, you still have time to get. They’re not necessarily the most affordable options — for that, see this collection — but they’re all guaranteed to arrive by Sunday.

Tile

4-pack of Tile Mate and Slim item trackers: $40 (save $30)

Does Mom often misplace her phone? Or keys? Tech to the rescue. The Tile Mate is a small, square, battery-powered tile designed to live on a keychain, or maybe attached to a purse. The Slim is slightly larger, but also thinner, and therefore better suited to slipping into a wallet.

When the phone goes missing, you double-press the button on the Tile. That makes the phone ring loudly, even if it’s set to mute. Keys missing? Use the locator feature in the Tile app to make the Tile itself beep.

One important note: This should be available for in-store pickup, but it’s too late to get free shipping in time for Mother’s Day.

Jack & Rose

Jack & Rose essential-oil diffuser bracelet: $17

You gave Mom the essential-oil diffuser last year, right? This year, let her enjoy those oils on the go. This stylish bracelet comes with eight colorful pads that can be swapped out depending on which oil she wants. (The oils aren’t actually included; she’ll use her current supply to put a few drops on each pad.) The straps themselves are available in four different colors.

Walmart

Shiatsu Foot Massager: $79.99

If anyone needs a foot massage, it’s Mom. This model kneads and rolls feet and ankles, offering four different programs and three massage modes. It even includes a remote.

Levoit

Levoit Kyra Himalayan Salt Lamp: $13 (save $9) with promo code JV52C7EF

I can’t say I get the whole salt-lamp craze, especially this pseudo-science about “negative ions” and improving your sleep. That said, they look cool and emit a soft, pretty glow.

This one consists of a 5- to 8-pound hunk of salt atop a 15-watt bulb (with two spares included in the box). There’s a touch-powered dimmer switch embedded in the power cord. Some 900 buyers collectively rated this 4.6 stars out of 5, so I think it’s a pretty safe bet Mom will like it.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite: $90 (save $40)

For the mom who loves to read, a distraction-free Kindle is hard to beat. This 2018 version is darn near perfect, and at $40 off it’s tied with its lowest price ever.

Still a bit outside your budget? The new entry-level Kindle, which features an integrated light, is also being discounted: It’s $70 (save $20).

Apple Watch Series 3: $199 (save $80)

At $199, the Apple Watch Series 3 still isn’t what I’d call cheap — but it’s $80 off the regular price and without question the best iPhone-compatible smartwatch.

The white sport-band goes with everything, but you can make this gift even more fun with some colorful replacements, like this three-pack for $14. While you’re at it, look at all the other inexpensive Apple Watch accessories you can get.

Facebook

Facebook Portal: $99 (save $100)

Don’t just call Mom to say hi — video-call her! It’s the 21st century, after all.

That option has rarely been cheaper now that the Facebook Portal is on sale for $99. It’s not only a dedicated video-call machine, but also a voice-powered smart assistant, able to play music, show videos, even run a slideshow of family photos. Even if you don’t have a Portal of your own, you can call Mom (and vice versa) via Facebook Messenger.

Heads up, shoppers: It’s just five days till Christmas, so any gifts you’re planning to buy, you’d better buy now. Have no fear if you’re behind. I’ve rounded up some of the best deals from stores’ holiday sales. And if procrastination is your enemy, no worries. I’ve also collected six last-minute gifts you can print or email.

We’re at the end of Best Buy’s 20 Days of Doorbusters and Walmart’s 20 Days of Deals, and there still some great deals from Dell, Target, Amazon and other stores. Indeed, many Amazon devices are on sale at or near Black Friday prices, including the third-gen Echo Dot for just $30.

Here are the latest and greatest picks, followed by store-specific roundups. Note that CNET may receive commission from the sale of products featured on this page.

Sarah Tew/CNET

iPad 2018 (32GB) with 9.7-inch screen: $229 (save $100)

Apple’s non-Pro iPad does everything most people want it for: Web browsing, Netflix streaming and playing games from the App Store. Target had been selling it for $250, but Walmart’s historic low is now the deal to beat.

Apple iPad review.

Taylor Martin/CNET

Amazon Echo Dot (second-gen): $20 (save $20)

Yep, last year’s Dot is still one of this year’s best deals — as it has been since before Black Friday. This may be your last chance to scoop one up at this price, because in the new year Amazon will undoubtedly be focusing its attention on the third-gen model.

Echo Dot review.

Xbox One S Battlefield V console with Gears of War 4: $200 (save $100)

Although Walmart still offers a variety of Xbox One S bundles (see below), Dell raised the ante today with this one, which includes not only the venerated Battlefield V, but also a digital copy of Gears of Wars 4.

Xbox One S review.

EA

Save up to 50 percent at GameStop

With nearly 500 titles on sale, here’s your chance to score some seriously good game deals. For example, you can bag Battlefield V for Xbox One for $30 (it’s also available for PS4 at that price), Lego The Incredibles for Nintendo Switch for $20 (that’s more than 50 percent off, actually) and Madden NFL 19 for Xbox One for $30. (Again: same for PS4 version.)

Shipping is free on orders over $35, though for some titles you may be able to choose in-store pickup and dodge the shipping fee.

GameSpot

Super Mario Odyssey for Nintendo Switch: $43.95 (save $27)

A game Jeff Bakalar called “a damn masterpiece” (see review), Super Mario Odyssey is $45 at Walmart but even less at MassGenie. Just make sure to click the Power Deal button.

Super Mario Odyssey review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Amazon Fire TV Stick: $25 (save $15)

It was $5 less on Black Friday, but $25 for Amazon’s Alexa-enabled streaming stick is still a pretty fantastic deal. As of today, however, it’s showing “in stock on Dec. 25,” so obviously it won’t be delivered in time for Christmas.

Fire TV Stick review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet: $50 (save $30)

After a long stretch selling for $60, the Fire HD 8 is now the same price as Amazon’s entry-level tablet, the Fire 7. But the HD 8 offers a bigger, better screen and faster performance.

Fire HD 8 review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Google Pixel 3, 3 XL get their Black Friday prices back

The Google Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL are discounted by $100 and $150 respectively on Google’s store, bringing both high-end phones back to their Black Friday weekend prices — $699 for the 3 and $749 for the 3 XL. They will remain at these prices until Dec. 22. Not bad for “the best Android phone of 2018.”

Google Pixel 3 review.

Best Buy’s 20 Days of Doorbusters: Day 20

Best Buy saved some of the best deals for last, including this 22-inch Insignia TV for $60. But here’s the best bet:

Chris Monroe/CNET

Lenovo 10-inch Smart Display for $180 (save $70)

We’ve tested all of the impressive new Google Assistant smart displays this year — Lenovo’s was the first, and it’s still a favorite. This is one of the best deals we’ve seen on the 10-inch model, though keep in mind it might be bigger than you’d want if counterspace comes at a premium in your kitchen. But the upgraded, bamboo backing looks really nice, so it’s worth considering.

Lenovo Smart Display review.

Walmart’s 20 Days of Deals: Day 20

Game time! Walmart is still offering a $10 e-gift card with the purchase of various popular party games, including Exploding Kittens, Cards Against Humanity and Unstable Unicorns.

Meanwhile, you can still grab a solid Nintendo Switch bundle and big discounts on Samsung UHD TVs and Xbox One bundles. And in case you missed it at the top of this story, the iPad 2018 (32GB) is at an all-time low: $229.

Walmart

Nintendo Switch, Labo and controller bundle: $340 (save $49)

It’s getting tough to find any kind of Switch deal, so Walmart’s is worth a look. In addition to the console itself, you get your choice of three Labo kits and an Ematic wired controller.

Nintendo Labo review.

Samsung UHD TVs for up to $400 off

Walmart is still offering up to $400 off a variety of UHD televisions, ranging from $400 to $1,400 depending on the model. The highest-end TVs appear to be offered at an even larger $1,000 off, which can be helpful if you were looking for a curved TV or just a Samsung set with a 55-inch screen.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Xbox One S bundles as low as $199

The Xbox One S is enjoying a range of solid discounts, including the NBA 2K19 bundle now at just $199 (down from $219 just yesterday). You can also step up to the Xbox One X console with this $399 PUBG bundle, a $150 savings.

School is already back in session for some lucky students, while others have just a few precious days of summer vacation left. Either way, you’ve missed all the back-to-school bargains, right? Not quite.

Walmart has a smattering of school-friendly items on sale — most of them focused more on leisure time than study, but a relaxed student is a successful student, right?

Here are some top picks.

Back to school 2018: Best tech deals under $50

2:27

The HP OfficeJet 4652 All-in-One for $45 ($54 off): This compact multi-function can print, scan and copy by way of an auto-document feeder. (It even supports faxing, assuming your student even knows what that is.)

See it at Walmart

The Acer Chromebook 14 CB3 for $219 ($80 off): A 14-inch screen and roomy keyboard make this a worthwhile choice for students. The CB3 also features 4GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage, and its stylish gold chassis is thin and light at about 3.4 pounds.

See it at Walmart

The Apple AirPods for $144.98 ($15 off): It’s not much of a discount, really, but AirPods deals are rare, and an extra $15 buys an extra pizza — or a couple new albums from iTunes. These truly wireless earbuds do require an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or something from the Apple ecosystem, so they’re not for Android users. Read CNET’s AirPods review to learn more.

See it at Walmart

The Beats Studio3 Wireless over-ear headphones for $199.99 ($150 off): One could argue that Beats headphones are overpriced to begin with, but that doesn’t make them any less desirable among the student set. Here’s a considerable savings on the Studio3 model, which employs active noise cancellation to block out partying roommates and other distractions. Read CNET’s Beats Studio3 review to learn more.

The Roku Express HD with $10 Vudu credit for $29: There’s nothing entry-level about Roku’s least expensive streamer. It serves up Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and all the other services a student would want, and it’s plenty fast to boot. It sells for $29 pretty much everywhere, but Walmart’s exclusive Vudu credit is icing on the cake: It’ll buy a few rentals or maybe even a discount movie.

See it at Walmart

The TCL 32S305 32-inch Roku TV for $129.99 ($70 off): If Junior doesn’t already have a TV to go with the aforementioned Roku Express HD, here’s a two-birds-one-stone solution. This TCL model has built-in Roku, and it’s a great buy at this price. Read CNET’s review to learn more. (Note you can get this at Amazon at the same price.)

School starts soon. For some, really soon. If you’ve been procrastinating buying a new laptop for your student, I’ve got one that might be a good fit.

For a limited time, Walmart has the Acer Chromebook R11 for $239 shipped (plus tax). It normally runs $279, and this configuration was $329 when it was introduced back in 2016.

See it at Walmart

CNET reviewed the R11 back then, finding it a solid system that maybe didn’t really benefit from a touchscreen — but Chrome OS received a touchscreen-friendly update last year, so now you can take better advantage of it.

This model features a Celeron processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, an 11.6-inch screen and a 360-degree hinge that allows the system to double as a chunky tablet. You can also prop it up in stand mode for movie viewing and the like.

For the K-12 set, it’s hard to beat a Chromebook. You get zippy performance, freedom from viruses and fully integrated cloud storage and services.

With less than one week to go before HTC takes the stage in New York, additional details have sprung up for the HTC One X+ smartphone. As a refresher, this is the handset rumored to be a faster, more powerful version of the AT&T phone.

Expectations thus far put the phone as running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and featuring 1.6GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor. Coupled with 1GB RAM and 32GB storage, the One X+ should offer consumers an updated HTC Sense 4.5 user interface.

The latest word on the street comes courtesy of HTC Source, which tells us that the One X+ will look identical to its predecessor save for it being ever so slightly thicker, likely to accommodate a higher capacity battery. The new flagship device is also tipped to come in a 16GB variant.

As for what HTC might have in store with its Sense 4.5 UI, HTC Source’s insider indicates it’s mostly behind the scenes. Rather than reinventing its own wheel, HTC looks to be improving the experience of its own apps. The gallery app, for instance, is said to pull images from outside sources such as Facebook and Flickr.

Perhaps as a sign of things to come, Engadget noticed that a quad-core version of the One X+ recently made its way to the FCC, which just happened to include 4G LTE support. Listed as offering connectivity to AT&T’s 4G LTE network, this would be a first for U.S. consumers.

Thus far, we’ve not seen a quad-core CPU and 4G LTE, however Nvidia has been promising such a beast for the end of 2012. For what it’s worth, there hasn’t been much noise on the T-Mobile version of the One X+ as of late; however, it is reportedly still in testing.

While we certainly expect HTC to announce the One X+ at its September 19 press event, this doesn’t mean the phone will be immediately available for order. HTC Source advises that that phone(s) may not be ready for retail until mid-October at the earliest. But whatever happens, CNET will be on hand to bring you the full story.
